Apostille or attest a death certificate for use abroad: NRI checklist

An Indian municipal death certificate is often enough for Indian banks — and not enough for a foreign probate court, overseas bank, or immigration file. Those processes may demand apostille (Hague) or embassy attestation of the certificate. NRI families lose weeks learning which stamp path their destination country needs. Get the right number of certified copies first; then follow MEA / state / consular steps for your case. This is operational orientation, not consular advice.

Apostille is typically used for countries in the Hague Apostille framework; attestation / legalisation paths apply for others. Which one you need depends on where the document will be used — not on what a WhatsApp forward says. Confirm with the foreign authority, your lawyer abroad, or the relevant consulate before paying agents.

  • Destination country rules decide the stamp path.
  • Some processes want notarisation or state authentication before MEA apostille.
  • Translations may be required if the foreign office does not accept English / local language copies.
  • Hospital letters are not substitutes for the registered death certificate.

Before you chase stamps — get the certificate right

  • Obtain multiple certified copies from the issuing authority while you are there.
  • Fix name / date mismatches before apostille — stamps do not cure bad data.
