DigiLocker for parents in India: what NRI children should set up and map

DigiLocker is one of the fastest ways to pull issued documents in India — Aadhaar, driving licence, and other issuer-linked papers — if the account exists and the OTP phone still works. For NRI families, the failure mode is simple: nobody knows whether Mum has DigiLocker, which mobile is linked, or where the unlock PIN lives. Set this up as life admin, not a death project. This guide covers family continuity around DigiLocker; it is not a government how-to that replaces the official DigiLocker help pages.

Why DigiLocker matters for continuity

Hospital desks, insurers, and some claim processes accept or request digital documents. When the steel cupboard is 14 hours away and you are abroad, a working DigiLocker (plus the OTP SIM) can save a day. It does not replace original registered deeds or every bank form — but it is a high-leverage piece of the Life Map.

  • Know whether each parent has an account.
  • Know which mobile number receives DigiLocker OTPs.
  • Know issued documents already pulled vs only Aadhaar linked.
  • Never paste DigiLocker passwords into a 40-person family group.

Peacetime setup checklist (video call friendly)

  • Confirm DigiLocker login works with the parent’s mobile / Aadhaar flow.
  • Pull and save issued documents they already use (DL, Aadhaar, etc.).
  • Note linked mobile and alternate email if any.
  • Agree who abroad may help in a crisis — without sharing the PIN in chat history.
  • Record “DigiLocker: yes / no / unknown” on the Life Map with OTP SIM owner.

Crisis-week realities

  • If the OTP SIM is with a neighbour or switched off, DigiLocker is unreachable — fix SIM access first.
  • If the parent is incapacitated, you may need alternate legal / institutional paths — DigiLocker alone is not a POA.
  • Download critical PDFs to the encrypted vault when the parent consents in peacetime.
  • Hospital admissions still need physical ID copies often — DigiLocker is a backup, not a religion.

Security rules for NRI families

  • Prefer the HeirReady vault for document scans over WhatsApp media.
  • Do not grant random “helpers” remote access to the parent’s phone.
  • Revise access after caregiver changes.
  • Pair DigiLocker notes with our SIM / OTP guide — same failure domain.

How HeirReady helps

  • Life Map flag for DigiLocker + OTP phone contact.
  • Encrypted storage for consented document scans.
  • Sibling unlockers so one NRI is not the only person who knows the setup.
  • Not a DigiLocker replacement — continuity layer around it.

Disclaimer
