NPS claim after death: what NRI nominees and heirs should know
NPS is easy to forget in a parent’s portfolio until someone finds a PRAN card or an annual statement email. After death, nominees deal with the CRA / NPS architecture, nominee records, and choices that depend on how the account was set up. NRI children need the PRAN, the POP or bank touchpoint, and the nominee status long before a claim form. This is a family-operations overview — always follow current NPS Trust / CRA instructions for your case.
What you need to identify first
The PRAN (Permanent Retirement Account Number) is the handle. Without it, everything is archaeology. Nominee details sit in the NPS record and may not match bank or LIC nominees. Know whether the account was corporate or individual, and which Point of Presence (POP) or bank assisted the account.
- PRAN and where the PRAN card / welcome kit is kept.
- Registered mobile and email for OTP.
- Nominee name(s) and percentage if multiple.
- POP / bank branch that serviced the account, if known.
- Whether the subscriber was already drawing annuity / partial withdrawals.
Peacetime mapping for adult children abroad
- Photograph PRAN card and latest statement into the vault (parents permitting).
- Confirm nominee update after marriage / birth / death in the family.
- Note eNPS or app login holder — usually the parent.
- Add an NPS Life Map item under retirement alongside EPF / PPF.
- Invite a sibling so one person is not the only PRAN holder.
After death: typical claim preparation
Death claims go through the NPS process published by the CRA / NPS architecture for nominees and legal heirs. Exact forms, death certificate requirements, and settlement options (including rules around lump sum vs annuity for nominees) must be taken from official current instructions — do not rely on a 2019 forward.
- Death certificate and claimant KYC.
- PRAN and subscriber details from the Life Map.
- Nominee / heir relationship proofs as required.
- Bank account details for settlement credit.
- Any POP assistance forms if you are filing through a bank/POP.
Where NPS claims stall
- Unknown PRAN — search email for “NSDL” / “CRA” / “NPS” statements.
- Nominee never updated; legal heir documents then demanded.
- KYC name mismatch with passport for NRI claimants.
- Multiple family members opening tickets without a single ops lead.
- Ignoring related employer superannuation or gratuity sitting beside NPS.
How HeirReady helps
HeirReady keeps PRAN, nominee, and POP notes in one sibling-shared place. It does not file NPS claims or replace the CRA portal. Continuity beats password archaeology under grief.
- Encrypted refs for PRAN and claim acknowledgement numbers.
- Checklist shared with unlockers.
- Link EPF / PPF / insurance on the same retirement map.
