PAN and Aadhaar after a parent dies: what NRI families should do

PAN and Aadhaar do not “transfer” to children — but almost every bank, insurer, and tax desk still asks for the deceased’s identifiers. NRI heirs need clear copies, matching spellings, and a plan to stop fresh fraud on those numbers. Map where the cards live before the crisis. This guide is operational orientation; official correction or surrender processes belong to UIDAI / income-tax channels and a CA when needed.

Why these IDs still matter after death

Claim forms, ITR work, demat transmission, and many KYC packs reference the deceased’s PAN. Aadhaar number and demographic details appear on hospital, bank, and certificate workflows. Losing the only clear copy burns leave days.

  • PAN card / e-PAN PDF location.
  • Aadhaar card / DigiLocker status.
  • Exact name spellings used on each.
  • Linked mobile numbers for OTPs — secure the SIM.
  • CA contact if tax work will continue for the estate.

Peacetime mapping

  • Photograph PAN and Aadhaar into the encrypted vault (parents permitting).
  • Note DigiLocker login and OTP phone — see our DigiLocker guide.
  • Confirm whether Form 26AS / AIS access is through the parent’s e-filing login.
  • Do not post full Aadhaar numbers in large WhatsApp groups.
  • Invite a sibling unlocker who can produce copies locally.

After death: practical do’s

  • Keep multiple certified / clear copies with the death certificate set.
  • Use official claim channels — never share OTP with “KYC updaters.”
  • Tell banks and insurers using your Life Map inventory.
  • Ask a CA before assuming e-filing logins should be used or closed.
  • Watch for fresh loans or SIMs attempted against the deceased’s identity.

Common NRI traps

  • Only photo of Aadhaar is a blurry WhatsApp compress — unusable at desks.
  • Passport spelling differs from PAN — fix mismatches via proper channels, not Tippex.
  • Closing every account before tax season without CA input.
  • Leaving DigiLocker reachable on an unlocked phone at home.

How HeirReady helps

HeirReady stores ID locations and sibling access rules. It does not update UIDAI or PAN records. Continuity means every claim desk gets a readable copy on day one.

  • ID / compliance item on the Life Map.
  • Encrypted scans; shared checklist.
  • Link to ITR and bank-discovery guides.

Disclaimer

Aadhaar, PAN, and tax procedures are governed by official rules that change. Use UIDAI / income-tax / CA channels for filings. This article is educational continuity planning, not official ID or tax advice.
