Post office savings claim after death: NRI guide to MIS, RD, NSC & more
Parents often keep money in post office products that never appear in a bank app: Monthly Income Scheme (MIS), Recurring Deposit, NSC, KVP, savings accounts, and older certificates. NRI children discover them through a passbook in a drawer or an interest credit SMS from “DOP.” Claiming after death follows India Post’s deceased depositor process for that scheme — nomination helps, missing passbooks hurt. Map every post office relationship in peacetime. This is family continuity guidance; confirm forms at the home post office.
Schemes families commonly overlook
- Post office savings account and recurring deposits.
- MIS / SCSS-style senior income products (verify which product you actually hold).
- NSC / KVP certificates — physical certificates matter.
- Time deposit accounts booked at a specific SO / HO.
- Old certificates in someone else’s custody “for safety.”
What to capture on a calm call
You type; they open the passbook. Frame it as bill-pay admin. Photograph identifying pages — scheme name, account / certificate number, post office name, and nominee if printed.
- Which post office (full name / PIN, not “the one near the temple”).
- Passbook or certificate numbers for each product.
- Nominee name as recorded.
- Whether interest is credited to a bank account — that bank trail helps discovery.
- Enter each product as its own Life Map item.
After death: typical claim prep
Take the death certificate and passbooks / certificates to the relevant post office and ask for the deceased claim checklist for that scheme. Procedures differ by product and nomination status. NRI heirs should align name spellings and appoint a local person for counter visits when possible.
- Death certificate copies.
- Original passbooks / certificates.
- Claimant ID and bank details for payout.
- Nominee / legal heir proofs as required.
- Application forms supplied by India Post for that case.
Where post office claims stall
- Wrong post office — certificates belong to a different HO/SO.
- Lost certificates with no numbers in the Life Map.
- Outdated nominee vs disputing heirs.
- Assuming bank nomination covers post office products automatically.
- Courier of originals without tracking from abroad.
How HeirReady helps
- Inventory every DOP product beside banks and PPF.
- Encrypted certificate numbers and branch notes.
- Sibling checklist for counter visits.
- Does not file India Post claims — continuity only.
