PPF claim after death in India: what NRI nominees and heirs should prepare
PPF accounts often sit quietly for decades — then a passbook or annual interest credit is the only clue an NRI child has. Claiming after death is usually straightforward when a nominee is registered and KYC matches; it stalls when the account number is unknown, the nominee is outdated, or siblings file overlapping requests. Map the PPF bank/post office, account number, and nominee while parents can still open the passbook. This is a continuity guide, not a substitute for the bank’s or India Post’s current claim checklist.
What a PPF claim usually involves
Public Provident Fund is held with a bank or post office. On the subscriber’s death, the nominee (or legal heirs if there is no valid nominee path) typically claims the balance with death and identity proofs. Exact forms and attestation differ by agency — always take the written list from that branch.
- Account number / passbook and which bank or post office holds it.
- Nominee as registered — may differ from bank savings nominee.
- Whether contributions were still active or the account was extended.
- Linked savings account for interest credits — another trail to find the PPF.
Peacetime capture on a video call
- Photograph the passbook first page (account no., agency, opening date).
- Ask who is named as nominee and when it was last updated.
- Note the branch / post office full address — “SBI near home” is not enough for an NRI sibling.
- Confirm which phone/email receives OTP if online access exists.
- Enter a Life Map item the same day under retirement / savings.
After death: documents families commonly need
Expect death certificate, claimant ID, bank details for payout, and nominee / heir proofs as the agency specifies. NRI claimants should align passport name spellings with Aadhaar and the PPF record before the first visit.
- Death certificate copies.
- Original passbook if available (or duplicate process if lost).
- Claim form from that bank / post office.
- Nominee ID and cancelled cheque / account proof for credit.
- Legal heir / succession papers only if the agency demands them for your case.
Where PPF claims stall
- Unknown which bank holds the account — search interest credits and old diaries.
- Nominee deceased or never updated after family changes.
- Name mismatch across passbook, Aadhaar, and claimant passport.
- Lost passbook with no account number recorded anywhere.
- Two siblings approaching two different branches with incomplete files.
NRI coordination tips
- One local ops lead for the branch visit; one abroad lead for scans and name strings.
- Track claim acknowledgement numbers in the shared vault.
- Do not post full account numbers in large WhatsApp groups.
- If the PPF is at a post office, confirm hours and ID rules before flying in.
How HeirReady helps
HeirReady stores the PPF inventory and sibling checklist. It does not file claims or replace the bank/post office. Mapped early, it prevents a multi-week hunt for one passbook.
- Free Life Map item for PPF with encrypted account refs.
- Sibling invite so knowledge is not trapped abroad.
- Link related FDs / post office products on the same map.
