Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) claim after death: NRI guide
SCSS is a common parking place for retirement money — and easy for NRI children to miss if interest hits a joint account they never mapped. On death, the bank or post office runs a deceased-depositor process for that account. Nomination helps; missing passbooks hurt. Map SCSS alongside FDs and PPF while parents can still open the passbook. Confirm forms at the holding branch or post office.
What SCSS looks like in the wild
Senior Citizen Savings Scheme accounts are held with authorised banks or post offices. Quarterly interest often credits to a linked savings account — that SMS trail is a discovery clue. Treat SCSS as its own Life Map line, not “just another FD.”
- Account number and holding bank / post office.
- Linked savings account for interest.
- Nominee as registered.
- Maturity / extension status if known.
- Joint holder rules if any — verify on the passbook.
Peacetime capture
- Photograph passbook first pages.
- Note branch / HO full address.
- Confirm nominee after spouse death or remarriage.
- Link the interest-credit bank in the same vault.
- Invite siblings so the account is not secret knowledge abroad.
After death: claim prep
Take death certificate and passbook to the holding office and ask for the deceased claim checklist for SCSS. Paths differ with nomination vs legal heirs. NRI claimants should align name spellings and appoint a local ops person for counters.
- Death certificate copies.
- Original passbook.
- Claimant KYC and bank details for credit.
- Nominee / heir proofs as required.
- Forms supplied by that bank or post office.
Where SCSS claims stall
- Interest credited to a bank nobody mapped — account still hidden.
- Wrong post office / branch.
- Outdated nominee.
- Assuming SCSS auto-closes when savings closes.
- Courier of originals without tracking.
How HeirReady helps
- SCSS item beside FDs, PPF, and post office products.
- Encrypted account refs and nominee notes.
- Shared sibling checklist.
- Does not file SCSS claims — continuity only.
