How to update bank nominees for parents in India (NRI guide)
An outdated nominee is one of the most common reasons bank claims drag after a death — ex-spouse still listed, spelling wrong, or “we thought joint account meant no nominee needed.” Updating nominations while parents are well is a short branch or app task; fixing it later can mean certificates and sibling conflict. This guide is for NRI children running a calm housewarming call. It is not bank legal advice — each bank’s channel differs.
Why nominee updates matter before anything happens
Nomination tells the bank who they may pay for that product under their rules. It is usually easier to change than chasing legal heir papers later. It does not replace a will for every asset, and it does not always end every succession debate — but a current nominee removes a huge operational block.
- Savings, FDs, and lockers can each have separate nomination fields.
- Joint-account mandates interact with nomination — verify both.
- Name mismatches (nickname vs passport) create claim friction.
- Mapping “nominee as recorded” beats arguing from memory.
Housewarming call script that works
- Frame it as bill-pay admin from abroad — not a death talk.
- Open each bank app / passbook; you type into the Life Map.
- Ask: who is the nominee today? When was it last changed?
- Photograph confirmation screens (parents permitting) into the vault — not the family group.
- Stop after two banks if they tire; finish next weekend.
How families typically update (varies by bank)
Many banks allow nominee add/change via netbanking, app, or a branch form with ID. Some still insist on wet signatures for certain products. Parents should complete the change themselves or with the bank’s accepted process — do not forge signatures from abroad.
- Use the bank’s official nominee modification form or app flow.
- Carry Aadhaar / PAN / customer ID as the bank lists.
- Update FDs and locker nominations in the same visit when possible.
- Ask for SMS / email acknowledgement and store the date in the Life Map.
- Repeat for post office and demat — they are separate systems.
What NRI children should not do
- Do not paste full account numbers and OTPs into large WhatsApp groups.
- Do not pay “nominee update agents” who ask for remote access.
- Do not assume one bank’s update covers every product under the CIF.
- Do not force a will conversation in the same breath if parents shut down — finish nominations first.

- Not a bank channel — continuity layer around the updates.
Disclaimer
Nominee rules and update channels are bank- and product-specific. Confirm with the bank. Nomination enforceability and succession outcomes can require legal advice for your facts. HeirReady does not file nominee forms.
